Waltham Abbey Science Trip
BackToday, Year 3 had a fantastic opportunity to visit Waltham Abbey Gardens as part of their science learning about plants. The children spent the day exploring the beautiful gardens while taking part in a range of exciting, hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of how plants grow and survive. They learnt about the different parts of a plant, including the roots, stem, leaves and flowers, and discovered the important role each part plays in helping a plant stay healthy.
Throughout the day, the children investigated what plants need in order to grow, discussing the importance of sunlight, water, air and nutrients from the soil. One of the highlights of the trip was an interactive pollination game, where the children became “pollinators” and learnt how bees and other insects help plants by transferring pollen from flower to flower. They also took part in a fun and energetic seed dispersal activity, exploring the many ways seeds travel, including by wind, water, animals and explosions!
The visit provided lots of opportunities for observation, teamwork and scientific discussion, and the children impressed the staff with their curiosity, enthusiasm and excellent behaviour throughout the day. It was wonderful to see them so engaged in their learning and enjoying science outside the classroom. Year 3 returned to school with lots of new knowledge, exciting memories and a greater appreciation for the natural world around them.
