Year 6 Geography Topic: Do We Have the Power to Change the World?
BackThis term, our Year 6 pupils have been exploring an engaging and thought-provoking geography unit titled Do We Have the Power to Change the World? This topic encouraged children to think critically about the impact humans have on our planet and the role we all play in shaping its future.

Throughout the unit, pupils examined both the positive and negative effects of human activity on the environment. They explored where our energy comes from, learning about the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources, and weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of each. This helped them to develop a more balanced and informed understanding of how energy choices affect the world around us.

The children also looked at how the Industrial Revolution transformed life in London and beyond, considering how rapid industrial growth brought both progress and environmental challenges. Building on this, they investigated the causes and effects of climate change, exploring how human actions have contributed to rising global temperatures and environmental damage.

As their understanding deepened, pupils engaged in meaningful discussions about whether individuals can truly make a difference. They considered the responsibilities of governments and the role of activists in tackling climate change, developing their ability to debate and justify their opinions using evidence.

To conclude the unit, the children reflected on their own power to create change, focusing on practical steps they could take within our school and local community. They generated thoughtful and realistic ideas about reducing waste, saving energy and promoting sustainability.
