Year 6 Crucial Crew

Year 6 spent a fantastic morning taking part in the Hertfordshire Crucial Crew workshop at Cheshunt Football Club, where they learnt a range of important life skills designed to help keep themselves and others safe in the real world

Throughout the morning, the children moved around a number of different workshops, each focusing on a different aspect of personal safety. They learnt about the dangers of vaping before putting their fire-safety knowledge to the test on the make-believe Blaze Avenue. Here, they had to investigate a bedroom and spot as many potential fire hazards as possible.

One of the highlights was definitely the chance to have a go at CPR training. The children learnt what to do in an emergency and discovered that the Baby Shark theme tune has just the right beat to help keep their CPR compressions at the correct speed – something we are sure they won't forget in a hurry!

We also spoke to the British Transport Police about staying safe around trains and railway lines, while other workshops focused on river safety and how we can all play our part in looking after our local environment.

Finally, the morning built on our ongoing learning about online safety. The children discussed how people they meet online may not always be who they claim to be and explored sensible ways to protect themselves, recognise potential dangers and know when to speak to a trusted adult.

It was a really enjoyable and informative morning, with plenty of practical activities to keep everyone involved. Most importantly, Year 6 came away with lots of useful knowledge and skills that could one day help to keep themselves – or somebody else – safe.
