Year 4 Biographies on The Matchbox Diary
BackYear 4 Biographies on The Matchbox Diary.
This half term in Year 4, the children have been inspired by the beautiful book The Matchbox Diary. The story, which follows a man sharing memories of his life through a collection of small keepsakes, has helped the children explore themes of family, journeys, and identity.
The Matchbox Diary tells the story of a young girl and her great-grandfather, who shows her a series of matchboxes, each containing an object that represents an important moment in his life. Through these objects, he shares his journey from childhood in Italy to starting a new life in America.
In English, the children have produced some fantastic biographies based on the main character. They carefully retold his life story, beginning with his childhood in Italy, where they described what life was like growing up in a poor village. They then explored his brave journey to America, writing about the challenges he faced along the way.
The children also wrote about his arrival at Ellis Island, imagining what it would have been like to enter a new country full of hope and uncertainty. Finally, they described his life in America, including how he built a new future for himself.
Year 4 have shown great empathy, creativity, and attention to detail in their writing. They should be very proud of how they have brought the character’s life story to life through their biographies!
