Year 1 Spring 2 Blog
BackEnglish:
This half term, Year 1 pupils have been exploring a range of engaging texts to inspire their reading and writing.
Using the story Julian is a Mermaid, the children have developed their imagination and creativity. They have enjoyed discussing the themes of self-expression and have used these ideas to create their own descriptive poems, showing growing confidence in their writing.
Alongside this, pupils have shared the story Leo and the Octopus, which sparked great curiosity about sea life. The children took on the role of “documentary makers”, researching octopuses and presenting their findings. They then created their own fact files, demonstrating their ability to gather information and record key facts.
It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged in both creative and non-fiction writing, developing a range of skills through these inspiring texts.
Maths:
This half term, Year 1 pupils have been developing their understanding of place value within 50. The children have engaged well with a range of practical activities designed to build a secure foundation in number.
Concrete resources, including Base Ten equipment, have been used to support learning. Pupils have explored how numbers are composed of tens and ones by physically constructing them, helping to reinforce key concepts in a clear and meaningful way.
Number lines have also been an important tool, enabling the children to practise counting forwards and backwards, identify missing numbers, and develop their understanding of number order.
