This term, Year 6 have been exploring the exciting world of living animals. We began by learning how scientists classify animals into groups based on shared characteristics, such as vertebrates, invertebrates, mammals, reptiles and birds. Pupils practised sorting animals and explaining their choices using scientific vocabulary. We then investigated how newly discovered species are named. Children learned about Carl Linnaeus and his binomial naming system, which gives every organism a two-part Latin name. This helped pupils understand why classification is important for scientists worldwide and how discoveries are recorded accurately through enquiry, discussion, and curiosity-driven learning across the unit together.

We finished off the unit learning about micro-organisms and investigated what the perfect conditions are for mould to grow. Slices of bread were either untouched, touched by clean hands, touched by dirty hands or wiped across a school IPAD. Then children then observed how mould grew and recorded their observations over a 2 week period. Rest assured, the children are all taking hand washing a little more seriously now!
