Year 6 Romeo and Juliet English topic

15th Dec 2025

This week, the children have been completing and publishing their own writing inspired by our class text Romeo and Juliet. Throughout this unit, pupils have explored the key themes of love, conflict, loyalty and responsibility, as well as examining how the choices made by different characters contribute to the tragic ending of the play.

A key focus of the project was a balanced argument, in which the children were challenged to decide who was most to blame for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet. To do this, pupils carefully considered the actions of several characters, including Friar Lawrence, the Capulets and Montagues, Romeo, Juliet and even the wider society of Verona. They had to present arguments for and against each character, supporting their points with clear evidence from the text.

The children were taught to write in a formal style and also learned how to weigh up different viewpoints fairly before reaching a justified conclusion of their own.

The children worked extremely hard to plan, draft, edit and publish their writing, showing impressive maturity, insight and control of language. We are very proud of the effort and thought they have put into this challenging and thought-provoking project.

We hope you enjoy reading and celebrating their excellent work at home.
